When you skip breakfast, your body increases production of stress hormones and starts to break down muscle (not fat – muscle!) to use for energy. It’s a very stressful situation for your body and wreaks havoc on your blood sugar balance for the rest of the day. It is best to eat breakfast within 30-45 minutes of waking and it should include a healthy source of protein (organic eggs, organic meats, wild caught fish), a source of healthy fat (avocado, nuts, coconut oil), and a source of carbohydrate (sweet potato, yam, or whole fruit). Protein has a stabilizing effect on blood sugar throughout the rest of the day. It also helps pull sugar into the cells so your body can use it for energy. Quality fats slows down the absorption of glucose into your blood stream, providing satiation and satisfaction. Complex carbohydrates provide your body with the preferred source of fuel – glucose. Enjoy your breakfast!!
